The Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) is an
event that was conceived to give recognition and to honour artistic and
technical excellence in music. The event, which is now in its ninth year,
has succeeded in becoming an impetus in introducing more creative talent
that has brought about change to the music industry.
Started in 1994 with the introduction of 11 awards, AIM has evolved to
become one of the most recognised award shows in Asia. In 1996 AIM began
to be broadcast live over televison and it has been watched by audiences
not only in Malaysia but also in Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia mainly
through the involvement of satellite boradcaster, ASTRO. NTV7 took over
the sponsorship and television coverage of AIM from 2001.
In 1997, AIM moved into the IT age. Cyber Music Asia (CMA) was given the
responsibility of designing and managing AIM's official web page and the
following year the awards night was infocast live where approximately
70,000 Malaysian music fans around the world followed the proceedings
not only on stage but also backstage. In the same year ERA FM carried
the event live on radio. In 1999 the show was webcast live on the Internet
becoming the first awards show in Asia to do so.
Today, AIM recognises not only local Malay talent but has also "opened
its doors" to local talent that produce English albums and Indonesian
artistes that produce albums for the Malaysian market. This was done to
show the magnanimous approach of the local music industry with the hope
that it will lead the way for our own music industry to grow and achieve
greater recognition.
AIM would not have been conceived without the commitment of many parties
but the industry is especially grateful to Mr. Tony Fernandes, Mr. Freddie
Fernandez, and Mr. Frankie Cheah who, together, had the vision in conceptualising
this prestigious event. AIM will forge ahead as long as the local music
industry continues to get the support of music lovers.
